The role of the Designated Premises Supervisor
By law, every venue operating under a premises licence must have a single named Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS), recorded on the licence. This person must hold a personal licence. For his/her premises, the DPS is the single point of contact for the police and licensing authority. The DPS has a wide range of legal responsibilities, including: ensuring that licensable activities are carried out lawfully, co-operating with licensing authorities in promoting the four licensing objectives, carrying out a risk assessment and assisting in the prevention of crime, violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour in and around the premises.
Are you a personal licence holder?
A person must hold a personal licence to be named the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS). As such, a prospective DPS must achieve the APLH/SCPLH qualifiction and submit a personal licence application.
The Award for Designated Premises Supervisors level 3 is not a mandatory qualification for a DPS. Rather, it is a beneficial qualification for an individual responsible for:
- a busy premises, such as a city bar
- a premises at particular risk of crime or disorder
- a large commercial premises, such as a conference centre or theatre
- a multi-function premises
The qualification is also advantageous for relief managers.
